I recently read Perfumes: The Guide A-Z per Emily’s recommendation, and immediately got obsessed with making a carefully considered, purposefully indulgent investment in an ADULT PERFUME.

My last ADULT PERFUME was Marc Jacobs, luxe and rich with the scent of gardenia flower, a fragrance I love but have hoarded, Scrooge-like, for the past five years or so.

I went to a beauty supply outlet this weekend and bought myself this expensive-but-not-outrageously-so classic, eau-de-parfum that I am still trying to get used to -

(even though it is legitimately beautiful, and Kevin got into bed and cuddled up to me last night exclaiming “YOU SMELL SOOOO GOOD” which does not happen often due to my habit of cutting up raw onions and garlic for most meals and then carrying that smell on my hands for hours, which I actually personally feel is quite delicious)

but mostly, because, where do I spray it?

Not on the wrists, too cold, and I’m far too likely to spend the entire day sniffing my forearms like a weirdo.

Not on the cleavage, too warm and immediate and a little too intense for my uber-sensitive olfactory glands. (I have terrible hearing and worse eyesight, but my nose is sharp and specific. Bad smells — artificial, plasticky smells, as opposed to warm, rich, fishy foody smells — make me very nervous; obnoxious Bath-and-Body-Works stripper-scents make me sleepy and headachey.)

Spraying a careful, economic waft of scent on the back of my neck, ok, that maybe I can do — but then I twist all over trying to smell myself! Am I trailing something woody-floral-amber-funky when I walk through a room? Or does it just make your nose burn?

Regardless, I’m enjoying my adventure with this new scent. Luca Turin writes in Perfume that Coco might still have a “terribly dated…eighties image”, but gives it four stars anyway for its “elegant spicy” composition and “complex, dusky, and exotic dried-fruit odors”. Sounds like something that would taste good with onions and garlic.

I recently became a cleavage spraying convert, but it’s mostly because I tend to leave the house in a rush more often than not these days, and I feared I was ruining my watches with my former wrist spraying.

It is a little cloying, and some mornings I feel like I can taste the Coco Mademoiselle as I inhale my coffee, but since I usually throw on a scarf, it absorbs a bit of the heady scent, and allows for a bit surprise wafting as I readjust it over the course of the day.

I’m still on the hunt for a new scent, so I’m going to make an effort to read this, especially since I really enjoyed Luca Turin’s The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell.

On February 4, 1992, Jonathan Larson saved a Microsoft Word document that grew, over four years, to become the musical RENT. Although Larson saved and resaved the file multiple times, at least some of the earlier drafts can be recovered thanks to Larson’s personal archival practices and a feature called “fast save” that was embedded in his copy of Microsoft Word 5.1. In this talk, Doug Reside, Digital Curator at the Library for the Performing Arts, will discuss the process he used to recover these early drafts and what his process suggests for the work of curators, scholars, and archivists in the future.

Morphotheque #12 (2001) is a collection of 4 elements, 1:1 casts of icicles. They are made out of polyurethane and each one measures approx. 70 cm. in length. The sculptural forms are exact replicas of icicles that are grown in a freezer in the artists’ studio. Despite the fact that they are grown under the same controlled circumstances (temperature, location, dripping time intervals), the development of each individual icicle is different. My stepsister went through a similar phase when we were kids, and she just refused to eat vegetables.

Obviously, this led to severe gastroenterological episodes, especially since it also coincided with her all steak, all the time diet.

I don’t think it related to any sort of psychological disorder, just a rampant case of pre-teen petulance — case in point: the time she refused to change out of her bathrobe for Thanksgiving dinner, and proceeded to get belligerently drunk.

She eventually grew out of it, or got tired of drinking Metamucil like it was going out of style.
