“Just in Case” by Micachu and the Shapes

Mica’s music tends to be rough and jumpy, but her voice is anti-pop: smooth, [mostly] calm, and informally polite. This fusion emphasises her unusual textures and jagged edges. It’s somehow both abrupt and composed. Think Björk pop, Blueberry Boat’s other-worldliness, and Bone Machine’s coarseness. This isn’t to say the music’s withdrawn or distant, though. It’s pop we’ve heard before, only gleefully turned inside-out and upside-down without ever deviating into absentmindedness. If you’re initially repelled, try once more. That’s all it seems to take; two listens and you’re wanting to hit repeat.
