ATTENTION CUNNING LINGUISTS: Here's a map of North American English dialects

golden-notebook:

You can zoom in close to see which dialects prevail in which regions, and from there, when you click on an area, it takes you to a listing of YouTube videos of people from that region so you can hear the exact dialect.

At the very least, what you can learn from this is what Sookie Stackhouse should sound like if she was a real Louisiana resident.

I actually really need this, because I have to come up with some kind of History of the English language syllabus at some point very soon.

Very interesting! My dialect is Midland: Corpus Christi. Some parts of Texas do NOT have speakers with the “Southern shift”, my area is one of them.

“Four and for”, “mourning and morning” are homonyms to me, as well as “hoarse and horse.”

“Pin” and “Pen” sound the same to me, and so do “Tin” and “ten”. I don’t understand when people say there is a difference between the way they are supposed to sound - a feature of Texas dialect.

The Canadian half of the map needs a bit of work.

I grew up in [Eastern] Ontario, summered in Quebec, spent quite a bit of time in New England in my youth, and have lived in Alberta for the past 8 years.

Albertans are the only ones who seem to think I have an accent, though they can never seem to explain what it is exactly that gives me away.
